#WhiteGirlsEvolving2k16

Yes! It is true! White girls are finally evolving. They finally have rhythm and are stealing all the black men because of it. All while doing this, they are making black girls seethe with rage because they have taken their spot.

Wow. I almost made it two whole minutes without laughing at the absurdity above. Happily, white girls are not evolving. And no, they are not snatching up all the black men. Most importantly, black girls could honestly give a shit about what a white girl is doing. But my question is, “What is it that white girls are evolving from and what are they hoping to become?”

Another more pressing issue that I have noticed on social media is the absurd fascination of black culture being portrayed by any other person than a black person. Aside from the fact that more often than not, the person appropriating black culture is doing a terrible job at it and generally looks a mess, the appropriator does not genuinely care about black people enough to recognize how they may feel about having their culture stolen. If you live near any television, radio, cellphone, newspaper or telegraph in America chances are that you’ve heard of the Kardashians. Moreover, you may have learned that they have discovered black men, boxer braids, and soul food. Ultimately, they have coined cultural appropriation and ran with it. To add a cherry on top, unbeknownst to them, they have assembled an army of faux fashion experts who believe that placing athletic wear underneath ball gowns is haut couture. To give a visual representation of this here are some tweets from a well-known Twitter account defending the Kardashians and their offensive behavior:

Not only are these tweets idiotic, they are dismissive at its purest form. Why is it an issue that people are now becoming more socially aware via social media? Maybe. people were vocal about cultural appropriation during the 90’s and 2000’s but their voice weren’t heard because they didn’t have a platform like Twitter to reach masses of people instantly. The second tweet particularly bothers me because the small adverb following black women. Too. Why is it that black women have to be included as an afterthought? It burns me to the core to see black women once again seen as an addition to the main attraction when they have been directing the show all along. Black women have influenced pop culture from the beginning of its inception and rarely receive credit for their contributions. Finally, addressing the last tweet, it is not only classist but just plain stupid. Poor people have a right to be angry, living in one of the wealthiest countries in the world and still not having basic human needs. Black women could care less about the Kardashians money, they are upset and the constant bombardment of “New! Hot! Fashion!” by a pompous, racist family when they have been doing the same things for decades. It’s disrespectful to take a hairstyle that has been around for centuries, slap a new name on it and pretend you invented it. It’s also disrespectful to reduce black men down to the size of their genitalia and the “beauty of their skin”. Cultural appropriation is not a myth and people are not becoming more sensitive as the times progress. In closing, I would like to reiterate that white girls are not evolving and Black Girl Magic is present and more powerful than ever.
